Olivia Rubens was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and comes from a Franco-Ontarian background. She attended De La Salle high school in the vocal specialty program, with an upbringing also immersed in opera. Also during her time at this school, she discovered her love for fashion design. She decided to study at Ryerson for a year in Arts and Contemporary Studies in order to improve her skills and apply to the Fashion Design program, and to get familiar with the school and the fashion students at the time. After working hard all year on the side of the Arts program, she successfully got admitted into the Fashion Design program and started her studies and career in Fall of 2011.
In her third year in the program, Olivia placed fourth place honourable mention in the Danier Design Challenge for her leather jacket design, and left soon after to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for an exchange lasting one semester. There, she learned to screen print, digital print, finger knit, use various knitting machines, denim engrave, embroider, among many other techniques while she took advantage of the facilities at the school, as well as the proximity between countries in Asia, visiting Thailand, mainland China, South Korea, and Japan.
Returning to Toronto in the summer of 2014, Olivia started to test the waters in the Toronto industry and created her women’s spring/summer 2015 ready-to-wear line under her new company name Frux. Furthermore, arriving in Toronto again back at Ryerson also meant that it would be the beginning of her long journey through her final fourth year collection. She is pursuing her true passion in this collection, which is contemporary womenswear using an artistic point of view, exploring shapes, dimensions and details. She is hopeful that she will be able to move on to Central Saint Martin’s, Parson’s or the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium for her MA in Fashion Design in the near future.
Becoming a member of Model Mayhem means a lot to Olivia because she needs to find the best faces out there that suit her aesthetic, and she feels that this social platform will allow her to reach her full potential on the runway and in shoots.
