About Me

I've got 20 years of amateur photography under my belt but am looking to go pro as I finally step away from my two-decade career as a magazine journalist. In the capacity of senior editor, and then managing editor, of a trade magazine I served as the staff photographer, though I don't feel like that's exactly relevant to the type of photos I want to shoot. (But still, probably worth mentioning.) I have limited work with professional models, though I have worked with some. Mostly I shoot volunteers and brave female friends. I'm converting my home office into a studio and would like to get things moving establishing Studio Number5ive -- my new venture and one I hope to make a full-time career. But -- baby steps -- I have to start somewhere and that's why I'm here. I'm finally in a position to be able to afford to hire models and I'm excited to get behind the camera and grow my portfolio. I was pointed to MM by a friend who's spent most of her adult life as a professional model. I'll almost certainly be leaning on her for advice and guidance navigating these new "professional" waters. I specialize in pop-themed work (movie-inspired, music-inspired sets) sometimes using props, sometimes costumes, and shot on location rather than in the studio whenever I can. Most of my work with women has been nudes, though I'm looking to broaden my horizons bit, as I'm sure I'll have to if I want to get my tiny one-man studio off the ground. Artistically, I'm inspired by the work of Richard Kern and Gregory Crewdson -- my favorites. Kern's photos and short films, in particular, are what made me pick up a camera in the first place. I spent a lot of time in younger years obsessed with his "transgressive" NYC rock-style work, which I aped for years before settling into my own style. My focus most recently has been a sort of post-modern pinup style that I'd like to fine tune. That said, I've also got experience shooting wedding photos and portraiture by request. I'm ready to indulge my artistic urges and broaden my horizons into new types of model work, FINALLY. It's been a long road, down a professional path I hated (journalism, reporting), but I've arrived at where I need to be to shake off the shackles of an office job and follow my passions.
Got any questions? Let me know.
