Rob Smith has been diving and photographing for over 46 years. Experience some time with Rob, and it’s like spending a pleasurable day with a mate, but you come away wiser about diving, photography and life in general.

During his diving career he has dived around the world, and taken part in many Marine Conservation Projects. From a spell as a Royal Navy diver, he gained his motto, “You can’t crack me; I’m a Rubber Duck”, which sums up his joy for life and wacky humour.

Rob has the magic touch with underwater photography – his transformational images of plankton-rich Scottish waters in 1991 made him an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society. Building on his two passions of scuba diving and photography he became a Freelance Photographer and PADI instructor and lived in Gozo, Malta from 2003 before moving back to Scotland at the end of 2017.

During his time there he’s been exploring the caves, wrecks and other nooks and crannies of Gozo underwater. His photography captures the best of the underwater world - the memorable play of light over such renowned sites as the Azure Window and the Xlendi Tunnel. When not shooting his atmospheric underwater scenics, you will probably find him close to the marine life. He loves creating macro portraits of colourful nudibranchs, bryozoans, and the multitude of other marine invertebrates around Gozo.

Rob’s talent at photography is not confined to the underwater world. He is also an accomplished portrait photographer, and he also shares his local knowledge of the landscape and seascapes during his photo walks.

Rob’s second home is the sea – not just Gozo. If you’re lucky enough to dive with him, you get a patient, knowledgeable guide with a sense of humour drier than your mouth after a long dive. And if you can’t? Well, his writing and photographs are the next best things.
