About Me

Maria J Hackett is a Brooklyn based artist. Heavily focused on her photography and dance throughout NYC, she continues her studies in phtography with her final year at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
She was introduced to photography in her junior year at The High School of Fashion Industries. From there, Maria continued a series of classes through The International Center of Photography’s Community Programs. Eventually, she interned, as well as taught as a teaching assistant for a number of classes through ICP. She gives much credit to mentors such as Keisha Scarville, Lacy Austin, Katie Kline, Wendy Jimenez, Brad Paris, Curtis Willlocks and many more for her on continuous growth in photography.
Along with a deep passion for dance, she connects much of her work with dancers. One of her main goals includes opening the eyes of viewers through many projects based on culture and community. One on going series includes Art Of Expression where she calls for a number of dancers to come into the studio. Photographing dancers as they freestyle on set allows her to connect with them on a more intimate level through dance, as she captures their movement throughout the shoot. Another series, Toa of Jamiva of 2013, focuses on a boxing camp based in Brooklyn led by Mustafa Marconi. Maria captured young teens and men who worked with Mustafa come into the boxing gym with strength, courage and determination. To many, Mustafa is a father figure, which was something she successfully captured throughout this series.
Recently, Maria has been selected among a few other creative artists to showcase her work at RawArtists' Brooklyn event, Feb 18th, at The Warsaw location. UPDATE: Now pushed for Spring 2017 Showcase.
Opening the minds of viewers is a goal Maria seeks out to achieve as she continues to explore her self and others through both dance and photography. Through her art, she will share the freedom of expression and allow others to eliminate the fear of being different, making all things possible.
