About Me

I've been involved in photography since I was a boy. I bought my first adjustable 35mm camera in 1975,when I was 12 years old. Over the following three decades I've been a full-time studio portrait photographer, a newspaper sports freelancer, and a dabbler in landscape photography. I have a clean, simple style that is built around high-quality lenses and high-resolution full-frame d-slr cameras. My boyhood idols were photographers like Irving Penn and Richard Avedon.

Over the last few years I've begun processing many of my favorite photos as black and whites. I have a very calm, steady shooting style, and am very good at giving posing directions while actually shooting. Because I learned photography and photographic lighting in the film era, my images are have a strong basis on the posing, composition, and lighting done at the the time of the shutter firing. Instead of hoping to "fix it later in Photoshop", my goal is to create a solid image in-camera, an image that needs only a few refinements in Lightroom or Photoshop to be a finished, presentable image. I am a "real photographer", studied and trained in photographic techniques and lighting methods. If you have a concept or idea, I can capture it with my photography and lighting skills. After having shot film for 26 years, and now with the following 13 years of digital shooting experience, I feel like I am in the middle of the prime years of my photographic abilities.

When I was a full-time studio portrait photographer in a very busy studio, I learned how to analyze faces and how to best light faces using a number of different lighting patterns, camera angles, and lens focal lengths. Indoors, I typically use Speedotron brand studio electronic flash units and light modifiers like softboxes, umbrellas, and parabolic reflectors fitted with honeycomb grids and/or diffusers. These modifiers allow me to both control and sculpt my light. I bought my first professional lighting set-up in 1986. I have since added much more lighting and grip equipment.

A typical shoot with me is about 3.5 hours and 700 frames. My portfolio here, and my link to my pBase site, are designed so that you can see multiple images from individual sets. Why? Because anybody can manage to scrape together one frame out of a thousand, or spend hours in Photoshop to create "a decent image".
