I've been doing photos for over 25 years... I love it! Its a constant in my life, even if I haven't pick up a camera for many months... or years.

I look for character & personality in a model... a person I can connect with. I've done shoots with fabulous looking girls, but if we have no connection then the shots are flat. Sometimes the photos from a less beautiful model will look fantastic, because of the emotional content/story captured... this is what I strive for!!

Nude, semi-nude, non-nude... that's ***totally up to the model***... I respect her choices. Nudes aren't for everyone - depends the person's character. I don't & wouldn't shoot a girl in a way that diminishes her and if I thought she'd regret later.

Chaperons are fine by me. I'd suggest a close girl friend who is happy to curl up in some corner reading a good book ***a girl friend only - no boyfriends, Dads or Mums!*** (because they mess the vibe & working relationship balance up on the shoot and then the photos are rubbish)

Its great to work with models that are professional, ie on time, have done their beauty preparations & had a good nights sleep, are relaxed and easy to get along with. Its great if she can do her own hair and makeup (having a makeup stylist on the shoot adds and extra person... which kind of divides the focus and energy).

As a rule of thumb for me.. the more the model likes my photography and the better her appreciation of creative photography in general... the more the photos will have a quality of emotional depth to them.. that something extra.. and the propensity to connect with & have deeper meaning to the viewer.

I know the more at ease & comfortable the model is, the more she can open up and give me the good stuff. Character, spunk, heart, soul, personality, story. So I spend a fair bit of energy monitoring her, especially at the beginning of the shoot... ease her into it. Thankfully I'm pretty good with the camera settings & stuff... and my style is to shoot with no crew & a simple setup - usually no lights, no reflectors, no flashes etc... there's a lot you gotta get right (guys and multitasking). So my main focus is on the model, the details, background & framing.

99.9% of the time I work on location. I find studios can be uncomfortable, dry. I try to pick interesting locations with some interesting elements to work with. also I love playing with natural light.

Like most photographers I guess I've had my share of problems with flaky, rude or disrespectful models... the old no-show! Some girls turn up looking crap after an all-niter on the booze, or are grumpy & impossible to work with. Or with more stubble on their legs than George Clooney on a bad day. Once I even drove from Sydney to Newcastle, a 2 hours drive, for a shoot. I confirmed with the model before I set out... but the damn bitch did a no-show and couldn't be reached on her mobile! I was pissed at that for a week!

I prefer (and have almost always have had the good fortune) to work with models who like my photos and are there because they really want to be. I reckon I've developed a sense about who really connects with my stuff, & who doesn't.

For a long time I haven't much been into writing a whole bunch of blah blah about me & my photos... I figured the photos should tell the story. So I thought I write some blah blah so you can get a handle on me.. though I won't be disclosing my top secret creative recipe just yet!!
