About Me

“We have art in order to not die of the truth.” – Frederich Nietzsche

Hi, my name is Dave and I am a long-time freelance photographer using both film and digital, in studio and on-location.

I consider myself, first and foremost, an artist and second to that, a photographer. I work with themes, moods, dramatic lighting, energy, emotion and sometimes humor to create (what I hope are) compelling images.

Where I focus my energies best, though, is where I can create a story with a photo, draw the viewer in for a second, lingering look.  If you thumb through my portfolio and some of my lists (the work of others I admire here), you’ll notice a common theme woven throughout.

I tend to create dramatic, almost cinematic themes, mostly in black and white. Unless you pay me to (and I would still try to talk you out of it), I prefer to avoid cliché poses. Generally that means a model in a bikini straddling a motorcycle on railroad tracks with wings on her back. LOL.

If you're a model looking to take your port and your modeling career to the next level, we should talk. If you're totally inexperienced but want to get off on the right foot, please contact me -- I am always happy to provide guidance and an objective review of your port.

TFCD vs. Paid Assignments
I will work TFCD with models who have a look or style that I need for my port. I use various professional studios in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area and renting space is expensive, so please understand that even trading time costs money.

I will also need models from time to time for paid assignments. In the case of commercial work, a standard release will be required.  Also, I participate in a number of photography Meetup groups that run seminars for aspiring amateur photographers. We always need models for our workshops and these are paid assignments.

Escort Policy
If you're not a full-time model and are just starting out, you might think you need an escort. Just so that doesn't get in the way of us working together, I am willing to work with models who insist on having an escort under the following limitations:

Only one escort per model -- don’t bring your college sorority or your brother’s rugby team for Pete's sake smile

For studio shoots, escorts may bring the model, inspect the studio, meet me and my assistant (if present), and verify my identity.  Escorts will be required to leave the studio during the shoot. This is required for two reasons:

#1 - Liability for me and the studio should something happen to the escort or should the escort inadvertently damage equipment or steal something (it happens).  Generally, escorts are unfamiliar with a photo studio setup. They can trip on a sync cable or light-stand leg, hurt themselves and damage studio equipment.

#2 - Escorts are a distraction for both the photographer and the model. It is vitally important that you, as the model, develop a trusting relationship with the camera, and by extension, me. Models cannot be looking at their escort (boyfriend, husband, sister, mother) and seeking approval or feedback.  A professional acts professionally and can make his or her own decisions during the shoot. I will always respect whatever limits you need to be comfortable.

Friend Requests
I'm the friendliest person you'll ever meet, but I'm not on MM to create a list of 2,900 random people I'll never work with. I only add people who I have a chance of working with or whose work I want to follow. If I don't accept your Friend Request, don't take it personally (I don't). It's just that there's probably not much chance I'll need your look or be able to work with you because you live 1,200 miles away.

So that’s my longwinded profile. If you’re in the Philly/South Jersey area and are interested in collaborating, send me a email through MM. I am working on a new website (among eleventy billion other things), so until that’s ready, MM is the easiest way to reach me.

Thanks for stopping by.
