Hi there :)

My name is Michael Hilliard. I shoot in my spare time, primarily as a hobby and creative outlet, but I occasionally sell or show my work.

I only began focusing on portrait work recently. I have a good idea of the style I'm going for, but I'm still working on figuring out how to achieve that look on a more consistent basis when I shoot. I want to create images that feel very natural, soft, personal and emotive, emphasizing the beauty of the subject. If you can imagine a taking a page from your diary and conveying it through a photograph, that's the sort of image I'm trying to create. I only use natural or available light to shoot and I prefer to shoot film because that is most flattering for the look I'm trying to create. Eventually I'm hoping to shoot almost entirely with film.

I do a moderate amount of retouching (at least when shooting digital), but I try to maintain a natural look. I'll get rid of minor blemishes, fix things that could be normally covered up with makeup, adjust skin tones, and play with contouring and colour a little—but I don't make skin look like porcelain, change body features (no tummy tucks or nose jobs), or over-sharpen images. I'm very good at re-touching, and I'm willing to consider requests for retouching work if you're interested (as long as it falls in line with the criteria above).
