About Me

I don’t own a digital camera. I use cameras passed down through three generations of photographers in my family. I create chemical images on paper, film, and glass.

For much of my recent work I have been making my own negatives and photographic paper with my own chemistry. In this way photography is a process for me in addition to a tangible end product. The medium is an experiential, physical and chemical transmutation of materials and light into an image indelibly marked in it’s component parts. Rather than get lost in some abandoned hard drive, a century or more from now these images will still exist, tangible and real, ready for someone to discover in a box somewhere.

I’m a third generation New Yorker and third generation photographer. I live in my grandfather's old suite in a converted hotel building. In my bedroom there are 50,000+ photographs from the 1910s-1980s and 200 film reels my grandfather shot of tribes living in the Amazon and dozens of cameras he left behind. Surprised the floor hasn't collapsed under the weight, I'm slowly adding my own photographs to the collection.

My grandfather, Roy Pinney, was born in 1911 and raised in a Lower East Side tenement. He began his career as a photographer and photojournalist at the age of 18 aboard a ship bound for British Guiana with a group from the University of Oxford. He was rarely without a camera for the next 80 years, photography was central to his life. He became a nationally acclaimed photographer working for the New York Daily News and Life Magazine, visiting over 160 countries, starting his own photography agency, and authoring two-dozen books. He married my grandmother, a model turned photographer who soon became a spokeswoman for Edwin Land’s Polaroid Camera’s in the late 1940s.

========== Attention Models ==========
Sorry, I can not really offer you paid work. I am shooting these images to create art. I'm not being paid to make this stuff. If you would like to come to my studio for 3-5 hours one afternoon or evening we can create together. I can offer you the scans/digital images of our shoot for your portfolio and I can invite you to the gallery opening when your images will be displayed but I am not in a position to offer money. I hope you understand.

========== Attention Retouchers =======
Unless you do real photo retouching with bleach, an airbrush, scraping tools and paints then you won't be able to work on my photographs. My photographs aren't digital. If you only work in Photoshop don't bother friending me.

========== Attention Everyone ========
If you write in all caps or if you can't form coherent sentences in your profile or in emails then I won't accept your friend requests.
