About Me

Hi Everyone! My name is Sandra Lee Whittington, but everyone calls me Sandy. I’m a natural-born ginger, only child, and I have always been an artist. I began doing photography when I was 13, and it has been my utmost passion ever since. I have won many local and national awards, had my photo on the cover of a magazine, co-founded the large photography club at my highschool, was voted ‘Most Artistic’ as a senior, was the Photo Editor for our award-winning 400-something page yearbook Senior year, and was the Photo Editor for The Cornellian at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa.

I am currently living in Richmond, Va, going to the highly acclaimed School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. It’s been a weird college experience in the past four years. I was originally attending Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA, class of ’12. I wanted to leave earlier, but because of other things going on in my life, I couldn’t transfer during my sophomore year like I’d wanted, and I ended up leaving mid way through my Junior year. I was on track for graduating in the spring of 2012, but my transfer to VCU ultimately meant that I would be in school at least 2-3 years longer than my original classmates from Cornell College; the reason for the [very] delayed graduation is that the VCU School of the Arts never told me that as a transfer student, I would be staying there longer than anticipated because of ‘the track plan,’ meaning certain classes must be taken certain years. That was a huge kink in my plans – I was anticipating graduating a year, maybe a year and a half later than my classmates… But alas, things happen for a reason. By the time I graduate, I will have been in college for 7 years, and that’s really difficult to comprehend.

However, the good news is – I LOVE Richmond. I love the vibrant art community, the old buildings, the weird college culture, I love Virginia… But yes, it’s still tough thinking about the fact that my friends have already graduated. But, this all happened for a reason and I’m happy where I am! I am also an Anthropology major with primary interest in feminism cross-culturally, hyper sexualization in America, homelessness, and gender norms. I plan to use my photography and anthropology degrees as tools for doing serious photojournalism and field work, and yes, my ultimate dream is to work, at least part time, for National Geographic. Nothing makes me happier than observing, wandering, and ultimately delivering what I’ve experienced to my viewers, teaching them about who I’ve met and what I’ve seen. And you know, while I love traveling more than anything, you don’t have to venture far to find some interesting characters and places.

Thanks so much for visiting. I hope you enjoy my site!
