About Me

First here is my Bio:

Artist Statement and Bio

The camera is an extension of my subconscious mind – sometimes I may as well not even be holding it, it may as well go off on its own – because while I'm photographing, the meaning isn't always apparent. Not until the images reveal themselves on a contact sheet do I realize that the process has taught me something about myself and the world around me. Photography brings what is not visible to the surface. The definition of light is the essential condition of vision – the opposite of darkness.
To have the faith to let go, to explore, to trust, and to give, to receive – without the need to see reason, or predict and control the outcome – has been a challenge for me in how I approach both my life and my art.
I grew up in Tanguy Homestead, Glen Mills Pa and went to East High school. I love to photograph interesting people in their own worlds and environment. Nature will always draw me in with its wonderful surprises and the peace that it gives me. I started getting interested in photography after my father gave me a camera and showed me how to use it when I was 15 years old, from there in enrolled in several classes at East High School photography classes.
I joined the Marine Corp where they sent me to some far off exotic places to practice my craft as a photographer, the experience that was gain in this ten year journey taught me how to view and see the world from a different light. The Military sent me too many different Photography classes and Seminars such as the Hasselbald advance photography school and Denver Colorado for advance printing techniques.

After leaving the military, I found work at Davor. I worked for several years doing year books and photographing everything from sports to school plays.

Not satisfied with this I enrolled at Delaware County Community College and found my love for the Art still excited even thou I was enrolled as an Electrical Engineer. I enter several art shows at Delaware County Community College and won most outstanding photographer, my knowledge with computers help me to aid the ART Department in constructing a new class in Digital Enlarge Negative were I also assisted in helping to teach others the new medium. I have also entered the Great Goshen County Fair and took first in two categories and second in another. I am currently enrolled at Drexel University in the Engineering program.
I currently use several types of cameras a 35mm format, Medium format and a 4x5 field camera, the 4x5 which is the most satisfying of all the photographic experience. I enjoy the whole set up; arranging the tripod, attaching and opening the camera, choosing the lens, focusing with the loupe, using the hand held light meter to determine how to set the aperture and film speed, and then finally taking the photograph.
Solomen likes to photograph nature for enjoyment and to share his vision of its beauty, quietness and strength. His sensitivity to simply being quiet, present and very observant in nature allows him to capture some of the most beautiful photographic images of the American landscape. My hope is that in rediscovering nature’s wonder, we can be inspired to help preserve it.
My love for the outdoors and my desire to share the beauty I see in nature is what drives me to take unique photographs of the world around us. I started taking nature photographs in 1990’s and spend all of my spare time teaching myself the craft. Using different cameras format, I try to capture the play of light on the subject and the emotion of the scene to create a unique image that stirs a response in the viewer. Our National Parks system was created, in a large part, because of the influence of the nature painters of their day. Without their paintings, Congress would not have created our National Parks. With this in mind, and as a tribute to those painters, I try to give each of my images the look and feel of a painting. It is my hope that people will see my images and understand that the need to preserve the natural wonders of our country for future generations is as great today as it was when the National Park System was first created.

Solomen Flewellen from West Chester has been a photographer in the area for over 12 years. After serving his country in the military doing photography for the government, he was employed by Davor Photography for several years doing year books and photographing everything from sports to school plays. Not completely satisfied with this employment, he enrolled at Delaware County Community College and found his love for the Art was as strong as ever even though he was enrolled as an Electrical Engineer. He entered several art shows at DCCC and placed as the most outstanding photographer for the year. His knowledge of computers helped him to aid the Art Department in creating a new class in Digitally Enlarged Negatives and also assisting with teaching others this new medium. Presently he has reenrolled at DCCC in preparation for pursuing a degree in Fine Arts.
