I work with an eye toward authenticity.

Nature and landscape photography is relatively simple in this way because the river, the flower, and the wild zebra don't lie about what they are. They lack artifice, and I am always happy to use them as subjects.

Portraiture, intimate or not, is a bit more challenging. It's a relatively straightforward exercise to make a pretty woman look pretty, a cute baby look cute, or a handsome gentleman look handsome. It is, however, much more rewarding to attempt to show the person behind the face, to capture the humanity of the human.

When it comes to making art, I am rarely intimidated by subject matter, and I am just as likely to be as passionate about the dark and dirty as I am about the pure and beautiful.

MODEL SAFETY:

I am very serious about model safety. Having dated a model in the past, I know just what kind of sleazy people there are in the world that she had to deal with, and I am determined to do everything I can to mitigate the risk of those situations occurring for all models.

1. Please do your homework and check references before you agree to meet strange people in strange places. The reason my friends list here is so small is because it consists entirely of people who happen to be on MM and know me in real life and can vouch for me. I encourage you to contact them before working with me.

2. Please show up to shoots with an escort, preferably one who is comfortable with staying out of the way but capable of keeping an eye on your safety. Quite honestly, if you (male or female) were to show up to my home studio without an escort, I would question your sanity a bit. I always have a nice comfortable seat, a Keurig, filtered water, and an open line of sight available for models' escorts.

3. If you have any allergies or other special considerations, please talk them out early in the negotiation process, since these could make a big difference to your health and well-being. For example, if you're allergic to cats, my home studio (and its resident feline) may not get along very well with you, and nobody wants to find that out the day of the shoot.

4. What's negotiated ahead of time is what's negotiated. If you find yourself in a situation where somebody is trying to change what the basic parameters of the shoot are in the middle, I encourage you to not just stand your ground, but to also take whatever money you're owed (see #2 for assistance here if needed), and walk out the door. If you want to volunteer something, that's fine, but don't ever feel pressured to take more clothes off or to let somebody touch you in a way that has not already been agreed on. I would rather have you leave a shoot slightly upset at a miscommunication than to not leave and feel pressured to do something you didn't want to do in the first place.

5. Don't even entertain the notion of saying yes to a personal advance from a photographer. A photographer you're working with asking you out in the first place is highly unprofessional, and you should factor that into your assessment of the person's character. My sex life is just fine. I don't need to creep on models to augment it.
