Friends (37)About Me
I am an old timey street photographer that spent decades shooting film before making the digital transition. Photography is my drug. I am always happy but when I am shooting or rendering pictures I feel high. I do a wide range of styles and genera, everything from weddings to band promos. This stuff is okay but my real passion is street photography. I love to shoot on location especially at night with portable light. I only get truly excited about a shoot when capturing something that is unusual and involves creativity. I would much rather photograph something bizarre for free than make money on a mundane shoot.
I am not particularly concerned with money. My purpose here (on Model Mayhem) is not to find work or to promote myself. I am here to locate models for personal creative (and fun) projects. The final art is what I truly care about. I think this forum is great. The concept of models and photographers trading work is really cool. In my case, however, I believe it is good to compensate models (and makeup or hair artists). I don’t have a huge budget but I do pay people for their time. Before I look for a model I have something very specific in mind. The process is like casting a character for a movie role. Even though it is a static image the character must fit the scene. A model who lists some sort of acting/theatrical background is worth extra points to me. This tells me she can probably project expression. Typically I spend several days vetting options. When I find the perfect face, that matches the concept, it is magic. A model’s face is the critical component. When looking through hundreds of profile images I always appreciate seeing a good head shot as the main feature. This lets me know whether or not to investigate further. At this point I don’t care about special effects, I just want to see what the model’s face looks like. If she does not feature a range of close up face angles I will probably move on to the next model. It is always a real joy to photograph a model that loves to ham it up and needs little verbal direction. Those who have good (spontaneous) timing relative to the photographer’s movements and shutter clicks are a true pleasure. Things I have no interest in as a photographer include: Physically attractive people who have no other dynamic virtue (such as creative style or unique attributes) Conventional, mainstream presentation of hair, makeup, and wardrobe All things sports related The country music video look Duck faces Outfits and poses that are overtly sexual but offer no other element of interest Sex industry clichés Nudity for the sole purpose of titillation Standard studio props and backdrops (such as faux columns or venetian fabric) Shock value that isn’t really shocking (or original) Overused sub cultural icons (such as Goth or pinup) that has already been done a million times and presents nothing fresh and fun Things I love to photograph for fun and might even pay for the privilege if it were unique enough include: Outstanding one-of-a-kind outfits that are beautiful, strange, ugly, or creepy. This includes period piece and homemade stuff. Very unique looking models who are beautiful, ugly, strange and unusual, malformed, extremely thin or aged or overweight Dynamic and unforgettable faces and facial expressions Authentic street style Skateboard culture girls that have urban or punk style Settings and backdrops that are mysterious, tragic, dynamic, loathsome, or funny Mismatched elements such as people, settings, and fashions that clash Things that are comical in a goofy, lame or kitsch sort of way Verified Credits (0)Worked with daniel m allen?
