EXPERIENCE

I've shot models in studios and on-location; I've covered festivals, gigs and news; I'm working towards my ARPS.

I've worked with full-time professional models, semi-professional models, non-models who just want "a damned good picture". I'm a volunteer press photographer for the Green Party and other environmental/ethical causes in and around Manchester.

I've been developing my own prints for twenty years, and even when I wield my DSLR in this world of "digital everything" I still smell of fixer and film.

ATTITUDE

My motto: "Only dead fish go with the flow."

Normal is boring and I like to reflect that in my photography with its alternative edge. I'm quite comfortable with your standard studio shoot, but love to get out on location for something really special.

I experiment with my photography but keep Photoshop as far away from the finished product as possible. Instead I'll do strange things with toy cameras and sticking bits of pond liner to my DSLR to fashion weird optical devices and make that new "look" I'm striving for. Not every experiment works out, but the ones that do are unique: you can't point to a plugin or filter that made that image look the way it did.

Each of my photography projects is a serious undertaking. I scout for locations, then I go out and visit to do test shots. I research, practice and plan ahead. I shoot film and digital, work with 35mm and medium format, and do my own developing in a dark-room. After a shoot I'm keen to get feedback from the model on what does and doesn't work, treating this as a serious collaboration. I'm not just a guy with a DSLR who calls himself "semi-professional": I'm working towards my Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society. I'm not just a photographer who is "good with computers": I want the image right "straight out of camera".

Normal is boring. Dare to be different.
