"Model Behavior," a local article by Lynette Carrington sums up much of my story:

The modeling industry is full of beautiful people who use their good looks to help sell
products. It is an industry that few can crack and even fewer can survive for more than a
few years’ time. Mesa resident George Mayer never saw himself as one of those beautiful
people, but everyone else did, including the modeling scout who originally discovered
him as he was cruising in a topless pony (more on that later) on the ASU campus.

At a strapping 6-foot, 2-inches and 180 pounds, Mayer, a cross between Brad Pitt and
David Beckham, was destined to be noticed. Mayer, whose parents are Hungarian, is a
first generation American. He noted that he does not look remarkably like his mother
or father, and he’s not quite sure where his height comes from, as his parents are both
significantly shorter in stature than he is.

In the late 1990s, he was attending college in Wisconsin, where he was a talented cellist.
By chance, he came to Arizona to play a concert and was greatly impressed with the
opportunities he found here. He soon transferred to Arizona State University to study
kinesiology (the study of physiology, anatomy and movement in humans).

What happened next was the type of “discovery story” that seems like it came straight
out of a movie. Mayer had just finished working out at the gym. He donned a tank top,
jumped into his convertible Ford Mustang and dropped the top as he cruised through the
ASU campus. By chance, he caught the eye of a stranger who pulled up next to him and
pleaded with him to pull over. “It was a total fluke,” he mused.

Though he had reservations about stopping and speaking with someone he didn’t know,
he pulled over. It took the attention of a total stranger to tell Mayer that his genetically
blessed looks could help him launch a new career for himself. That total stranger turned
out to be a modeling scout.

“I didn’t think he was serious,” noted Mayer. Shortly thereafter, he attended a modeling
convention (sometimes coined a “cattle call”) wherein half of the aspiring models were
eliminated. Mayer made it through and began to think that maybe there was something
to what the modeling scout told him. His then-girlfriend snapped a couple photos of him,
and he ultimately came to the attention of Wilhelmina Models in Los Angeles. Since he
was still attending ASU at the time, he waited until graduating in 2002 before moving to
Los Angeles, where he signed with Click Agency.

Mayer quickly landed an editorial shot in Glamour magazine. As with many hopeful
models (and actors) who move to L.A. to pursue their careers, Mayer took a second job
as a bartender to help pay the bills. After eight months, Mayer wasn’t getting the amount
of work he had hoped for and returned to the Valley. But it seems that modeling was
in the stars for this young man, and he was once again approached by a photographer,
who asked if he was with Ford Robert Black Agency. He ended up signing with the
prestigious Scottsdale agency in 2002 and has been a working model ever since.

Part of a model’s job is to be appealing to all sorts of potential clients and their
prospective customers. Mayer’s appeal is international. He has done work in editorial,
print and runway. Primarily, he worked in Taiwan and mainland China, and he also spent
several months working in Hamburg, Germany. (While he was working in Europe, he
had the opportunity to visit his parents’ homeland of Hungary.)

Any model, male or female, has to maintain some sort of a beauty regimen in order to be
runway or camera-ready, and Mayer is no exception, opting to keep it simple. He used to
work as a personal trainer, so working out is a top priority for him. Beyond that, he keeps
his skin in shape with a daily moisturizer and makes it a point to practice clean living. “I
don’t smoke, and I rarely drink,” explained Mayer.

As a true professional, he understands that his look and his attitude matter to companies
and advertisers that may potentially hire him to represent their products and clothing
lines. Whether he’s wearing a suit and tie or a bathing suit, “I have to make sure I’m
looking the part,” he said.

Occasionally, modeling entails being more than just a beautiful face. During one
modeling assignment in Taiwan, for example, Mayer got a little more than he bargained
for. He was sent for a studio shoot that required him to do some jumping during the
session. Mayer said that in Taiwan, nearly everybody smokes, and the indoor set where
he was working was not off limits to lighting up. In addition to the several hours of
posing and rigorous jumping, the smoke became nearly unbearable. The next day, his
calves were so sore that he couldn’t walk. That photo shoot remains one of the most
unpleasant modeling experiences of his career.

Mayer continues to enjoy his bookings through Ford Robert Black Agency and has
appeared on the cover of and in many magazines, including Sedona Monthly, Trends and
Tucson Lifestyles. Although he enjoys runway work, he says that doing print work is his
personal favorite. “I like to see the finished product and critique my own work,” he said.
In addition to his print and runway work, he has also appeared on the local news and the
television show “Extreme Dating” with Jillian Barberie.

Mayer recently moved from Gilbert to Las Sendas, where, in addition to his modeling,
he is a real estate agent with Faith Real Estate and Investments. “I love this area,” he
explained. “And I love being close to Saguaro Lake.” The close proximity to the lake is a
bonus for Mayer, who loves water sports and wakeboarding.

At an age where most female models would have long since hung up their Louboutin
high heels, Mayer continues to enjoy his work in modeling. His girlfriend doesn’t mind
either. “My girlfriend is supportive. She likes that I’m in an occasional magazine,” he
noted.

He now tries to keep traveling to a minimum. Even so, he continues to have
representation in Chicago, Milwaukee, Europe and Taiwan. As for the future of
modeling, Mayer takes it all in stride. “It will always be there if I want to do small things,
and maybe it will just become a hobby,” he said.
