Gianrico, born in Vittoria, a province of Ragusa in Sicily, in the last century,  begins to use the  camera when a teenager and uses this extraordinary medium to immortalize the architectural features peculiar to his own town.
In 1994, thanks to his friendship with a photographer from Novara, he develops his knowledge of photographic technique and begins to use the dark room:
witnessing the birth of images during the development process after exposing the paper with silver halides and immersing it in chemicals deeply fascinates him; processing the negatives from the images  allows him to develop the depth of emotion felt when  fixing an image through a lens.
In time photography becomes an instrument of expressing what words cannot say and explicate  intimate ideas, thoughts and feelings that cannot even be whispered.
Technological advances and digital photography allow him to carry on cultivating this interest, specializing in already known techniques while experimenting with new ones. Still, he is faithful to the canon of Ansel Adams, Robert Capa and all the other photographers who have immortalized this noble art of communication.
His love of travel and inborn adventurous spirit drive him beyond his national boundaries to far away countries such as Afghanistan, Tanzania, Kenya, which all have greatly inspired his creativity.
The interaction and exchange with people from other cultures have occasioned a deep personal growth and have given new sap to the work of Gianrico Battaglia.
The camera, a faithful partner of these ‘soul journeys’, has documented this experience devotedly, fixing landscape, form, light and color of such intensity that the observer could not remain indifferent.
In his body of work, which is expansive and varied, is an expression of a curious and eclectic spirit, people, and faces in particular, occupy a prominent position.

After living in Milan, Bari and Naples for many years, Gianrico is now permanently in Messina, where he lives and works.
