Ekaterina Kukhareva is a Ukrainian born designer based in London. Ekaterina has graduated from the prestigious Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design with a degree in Textiles specialising in knitwear. Since her first year of college she has pursued different options and quickly developed a love for textile design. She admires the endless possibilities of knitting techniques and combinations! It is the weight, structure and shape that form the knitted fabric. In her collections the emphasis is on the following techniques: macramé, fringing, knotting, crochet, beading etc.
The knitwear fabric itself combines the unique structure combinations and carefully sourced yarns from all over the World. Therefore the collections are made from scratch: starting with the yarn sourcing and finished with beautiful hand-made details.
The work is brightly hued while the actual fabric with its intricate details takes centre stage. Careful attention is paid to the finishing and trimmings creating luxurious garments with sharp tailoring and romantic fluidity.
Ekaterina’s signature style and inspiration is drawn from her Russian roots as well as the world’s history. She is particularly moved and intrigued by queens of previous eras. Ekaterina enjoys the enormous spectrum about queens that is left to the beholders eye; as we can only learn so much about a queen’s lifestyle and culture from delivered artefacts such as: books, paintings, films and museums. However a lot about their characters and beings is left to our imagination! In the previous collection she has looked into one of the major icons in our history: the queen of Egypt - Cleopatra. Cleopatra’s image and the perception of her are changing from generation to generation. In 1934 she is associated with Claudette Colbert; a manipulative, wily and seductive woman wearing leather, gold and pearls. In 1963 we think Cleopatra looked and acted just like Elizabeth Taylor, a beauty symbol that wore beads in her hair, enormous head jewellery as well as silk dresses. Ekaterina created a range of pieces for the Cleopatra of today who she sees as a modern, sharp, humorous woman with a futuristic edge. She highlighted these characteristics by using stunning knit patterns, some of which have been around for many eras of kings and queens and reinvented them by creating bright and daring colour combinations and transforming them into modern and experimental design cuts.
The Connection with the contemporary woman of today channels the queens’ characters in Ekaterina’s knits. This way she creates a relationship with the garment and the wearer’s body!
The brand’s aim is to create timeless and high quality pieces with the emphasis on the beauty of the female body and the elegance and sexiness of the collection wearer.
