About Me

While I've shot a wide variety of genres and subject matter, I lean toward images that have a particular ambiance, and I like working with interesting natural lighting conditions. I prefer artistic frames that hint at some kind of story behind them, as I come at the still image from a background in theater and cinema. I used to see things in motion, however photography has slowed me down to the point where sometimes I see moments in glance-fulls and others that need to be strung together in sweeping tales.

I studied illustration and film making at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA. and if you've been there, then you know what a dramatic and sweeping location Savannah is all on it's own! I actually started out as an art director, makeup artist, and a model for my peers and their senior photography and film projects, and did a large amount of portrait work on both sides of the camera.

Photography-wise, I was more into documentary styled news at the time, and so I began my camera career in editorial work for publications in Savannah and Atlanta before moving to Washington, DC. Based in DC, I spent a couple of years traveling the US. I photographed urban life and events locally and in major cities across the nation. Some of my work went on national tour as part of a larger exhibit and then was published in a hardcover book by Harper-Collins in 2003. Other work has been permanently archived at the New York Public Library in NYC. Still other work was encapsulated in a large scale oil painting series I created of a scene from each of the more than 30 major US cities in which I spent time exploring in two years. The series was shown in Philadelphia and in Atlanta before I sold and gifted the paintings off one by one.

Slowly, I made the switch to digital and began re-learning everything and adjusting to the "dry darkroom". I miss film very much and still dabble in it from time to time but I also have learned to appreciate digital a lot. I spent a few years doing weddings and a lot of boudoir portraiture. Now I do a lot of live event photography, have photographed at SXSW in Austin, TX, many musicians at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, PA, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in NYC, worked with the Food Network, SmartTalk Women, and will be traveling to Haiti soon to photodocument Delaware Medical Relief Teams and their efforts in soothing the current cholera outbreak.

While much of my work is either still life or photojournalism, I have enjoyed getting into more studio and location work and expanding my skills in the way of emotive portraiture for fashion. I'd like to continue in this direction to balance my 'in the moment' work and grow.

I'm interested in working with regional models on several conceptual ideas I have dreamed up. I hold a few screen credits in the independent film arena as a production designer / art director and hunger to tap into that to build something using dramatic textures, colors, and lighting around a willing model. I'd love to do a series inspired by my illustrative and cinemagraphic mind and get back into pushing my own envelope. This summer I will be doing a vintage style shoot just outside of Philadelphia in New Jersey as part of packaging for an area musician's c.d. release and will be looking for a couple of models with the right look for that in a few months. I am regularly being offered gallery exhibition space in my area and thus would like to work on a special project or two to be shown later in 2011.
