Bonjour, bonjour, bonjour tout le monde! Welcome to our new web page, le site de Christine and Eric Mahler, les photographes extraordinaires de la compagnie "Awen Photography." We encourage you to browse through our web site - check out our galleries, our blog entries, our extras - and learn more about who it is that we are and what it is that we do.

As you browse through this web site, you will discover probablement that we enjoy doing a wide variety of things, beacoup de choses, and that we, or at least I, speak also a couple of languages (c'est genial!)! But, after much thought (and much practice!), we have now decided to make photography the forefront of a business we had been planning to start for a very long time.

The idea of la photographie, en particulier, occurred to us one day when we were visiting the very lovely, very rainy city of Seattle several years ago. At the time, we owned just a dinky little 3.1 MP, 5X Zoom Hewlet Packard point-and-shoot camera (see picture here and you will perhaps understand our early frustrations!). As we walked about Pike's Place and then down to the Pier, we talked about a variety of things - global warming, abortion, same-sex marriage... you know, the usual politically charged topics any couple would like to broach with each other at one time or another - when we decided to stop for a minute on this very special bench just between Pike's Place and the waterfront. There we snapped shots of the bench (although unsuccessfully) and birthed (yes, we did labor ever so hard for it!) the idea of starting up a photography business. We even came up with a name for our business at that time which we thought was GENIUS. C’était parfait! C’était magnifique! C’était très bien! But... we cannot remember that name to this day, so voila! AWEN Photography is born!

These days, we have, obviously, upgraded our kiddy camera to a more hefty, more macho camera des cameras. And it is magnificent in our eyes! We now work with the marvelous Nikon D90 who comes equipped with so many wondrous things... too many wondrous things in fact for us to be able to afford all of them. But the wait will most certainly be worth it... although we might have drowned in our own drool before we ever get to that point.

Anyway, once again we encourage you to browse through our web site some more and see firsthand some of the many things that we do. We are always working on this project or that, always keeping ourselves occupied. It is quite simply, simplement, the way we must be. Les personnes creatives avec les grandes idées! Toujours toujours toujours! Vos artistes, surtout, qui doivent poursuivre ses rêves!

What is "Awen"?

A•wen (awe-when)

If you did a Google search of the word "Awen," you will likely come across the Wikipedia explanation of it:

Awen is a Welsh word for "(poetic) inspiration". It is historically used to describe the divine inspiration of bards in the Welsh poetic tradition. Someone who is inspired, as a poet or a soothsayer, is an awenydd.

One might find it rather presumptuous to name a business after a word meaning "poetic inspiration" given that inspiration is a purely subjective experience. We, however, attribute our final selection of the title "Awen " to our own aspirations toward "poetic inspiration." We hope that it might also inspire, but, as we all must know by now, art (not just beauty) is in the eye of the beholder.
