My name is Katie Harper and I'm a photographer - pleased to meet you!

I got my first taste of photography about 17 years ago when I was given a hand-me-down Pentax ME Super for my 14th birthday; I've been in love with taking photos ever since. I began with 35mm and medium format film, and then converted to digital about 5 years ago, though I do still pull out the film once in a great while. My primary camera is a Nikon D700; secondary is an Olympus E-510. I have a selection of lenses for both.

Though my work represents a fairly diverse range of themes, I tend to focus on photos that tell a story. I'm not afraid to try new things photographically, but I've always had an affinity for art and photography with darker subtexts. My inspiration comes from a variety of places: literature, movies, music, art, nature and the most seemingly random of occurrences.

I'm an avid urban explorer, legend hunter, nature lover and historical preservationist. As such, I love shooting outdoors and in interesting and sometimes forgotten spaces. I'm comfortable shooting in the country or in the city, in an old mill building or around a historical ruin, in the woods or in a field of flowers.

For indoor shoots or when inclement weather strikes (a rarity in New England, I know ;)), I also have an 800 square foot studio in Chicopee, Massachusetts. I have a variety of lighting, props and background materials available to add visual interest and create more than your average studio shot.

I'm always adding to my notebook of shoot ideas, and I'd also love to hear about any odd or artistic concepts you may have. I frequently add to my collection of props and wardrobe, so don't worry if you have a great idea but nothing to wear.

If you have a great theme or concept you'd like to pitch, a full team, and/or a tear-sheet opportunity, please don't hesitate to message me regarding a TF shoot. Otherwise, my portfolio development package rates are very reasonable, and I'm always open to the idea of trading for random stuff, including camera gear, props, furniture, vintage wardrobe, good books, musical instruments and Jagermeister.

[b]Further Notes:[/b]

Sometimes I plan every shoot down to the second and every shot down to the inch, sometimes I fly by the seat of my pants. Sometimes I direct very specifically, sometimes we go with the flow. I tend to cover a lot of artistic ground in a very short amount of time. Be prepared to start in the studio and end up in the basement. Be prepared to get dirty. Yes, you are allowed get dirty in my wardrobe, that's what it's there for!

I hate talking on the phone. I don't know why, but I do. If you wish to take our correspondence off of the MM messaging system, you can send me an email, text, Blackberry messenger IM, Facebook wall post or even a carrier pigeon....but I just don't really do phones.

I'm female, and pretty seriously non-threatening. I do allow escorts, but if you plan to bring someone with you it would be sweet if you could let me know ahead of time. Occasionally I will have an assistant with me while shooting, especially if we're doing a big production with a full team and multiple models or we're on location and I have to carry a bunch of stuff. There's about a 99% chance this person will be one of my similarly non-threatening photographer or model friends. If you'd rather work just one-on-one, please let me know ahead of time....and be prepared to carry stuff ;)
