About Me

I've been a photographer and retoucher off and on for over 40 years. At one point I made a living at it, but I got sidetracked into academia and business.

Now I'm (semi-)retired and I've rediscovered the old creative joy of making pictures. I'm still making the transition from the darkroom to digital technology. I'm finding that there is a lot to learn, but in many ways it is easier than film. I'm also discovering that the old skills of composition and lighting are eternal.

This is my Photoshop account. I started out making images with projectors and chemicals, waving little paper bits around to dodge and burn silver halide prints. Although I can get all nostalgic about the magic of developing and printing pictures the old way, the truth is I think Photoshop is wonderful and would never go back.

I do restorations as well as digital retouching. The picture of Nancy at the statue of Alice in Wonderland is a restoration of a photo I shot in the 60s, restored from a damaged b&w print after the negs were lost. The print is stained, badly scratched, and torn on one side.
