My immediate response to Mark's work, was "pow!". I was inundated with strong bursts of color and no holds barred characters; sometimes dark, often dangerous, and weirdly adorable. Mark's work is razor blade sharp and cotton candy sweet all...... at once. By viewing his photography, its clear to see that Mark has a graphic illustration background, is a comic book "geek", and unquestionably loves women. His female subjects; high glamor, powerful, dominating, dominated, vulnerable, beautiful, clownish and complex, are reminiscent of a fellini-esque fantasy. However, Mark's work is pure Americana, specifically drawing from America's pre-21st century counter-cultures. In this sense, Mark K. Hollinger can easily be coined America's "dirty Norman Rockwell."
