Indian-born photographer Ash Gupta is a celebrated, internationally known photographer who has made his home in Los Angeles, but is very much in demand around the globe.  He has photographed top models, celebrities, including Elizabeth Shue, Sharon Lee, Dominique Swain, and Davis Guggenheim, just to name a few.  Ash came from a small town in India.  He was very young, just 15 years old, when he got involved in commercial theater and met a group of friends who happened to paint.  He tried painting, too, but realized that the soul was missing.  And through this quest he found his way to photography.

This is the puzzle, pieces falling into place.

“You will hear most photographers, most artists, tell you that they see beauty everywhere, around every corner, in every face, in every shadow, every trace of light. I cannot. I see the odium, bourne of the chaos that life provides. I rearrange the pieces…hold them in hand, mold and shape…this is what I am, this is what I give.”

Distilled into the soft quiet beauty of the moment…to be the eye of the beholder, taking what is not there, stripping away what is not needed.

“Real life, domestic life, the days that we move in and out of so easily…this is so far removed from the apparitions that I realize through the work.”

…Ash and the collected talent curled around him are having the quietest most idealistic argument ever. Their silhouettes falling against the soft darkness of the loft as their gazes bathed in, and fixed intently on, the light of the images before them. Lowered voices and intense comments…half empty bottles of wine. They pause, the tension lifts, eyes are closed for a moment as heads are slowly drawn back…cigarette break. “Every image is a life, a moment, a world…and everyone sees the world through their own eyes. I cannot help but give myself in the images I create…cannot help but live out my own dreams through the creation of them. I don’t document beauty…. these images are not Xeroxes of the world around you…they are the light from a small gap that looks onto something else.

Over the past  two decades, Ash Gupta, has been the central figure in a nebulous of creative minds and energy.  Guiding a group of talented individuals, he set out to follow a dream, and now that dream has taken shape as Studio 838.
