Hey guys! Obviously I’m new to boudoir and more risqué photography and I’m learning a lot of studio lighting rules at the same time. I was wondering if anyone has had luck in building a portfolio with experienced models. I’m in the southeast but I haven’t been able to connect with many models consistently. Would it make sense to book a flight and shoot in an Airbnb in a big city like NYC or LA to get a bunch of content to start out?

From the Field of Dreams "Build it (a High End Portfolio) and they will come"
A quick glance at your Mayhem Portfolio gives the impression that you may have a long journey ahead...

From your Mayhem Profile "I am ultimately looking to build more images with a variety of faces with boudoir and artistic nude style images"  Which loosely translates to an interest in Soft Porn (which btw is analogous to the "Kiss of Death" for those wishing to book Agency Talent)

From your Mayhem presence...
"I haven’t been able to connect with many models consistently..."
Understandable... Again from a quick glance at your Mayhem "Book"

"wondering if anyone has had luck in building a portfolio with experienced models" Erik I collaborate almost exclusively with Agency and/or Agency Worthy Talent, the only exception are professionally trained Ballerinas.  I've never had any issues what so ever when seeking talent to test with from the Model Agencies in my market.

Erik you are truly blessed by having PAMA Models (https://www.pamamodels.com/fashion) in your market...
Their Fashion Model Page is to be cherished... Please check out this link for a sample of the stellar Talent they represent.

Albeit if you are primarily interested in Soft Porn please don't waste yours &/or their time...
Wishing you much joy and success on your photographic journey.
Cheers! Thomas Van Dyke

There are lots of traveling, experienced models on MM. Look through travel notices and casting calls.

I've rented air bnbs a few times, but had model shoots lined up in advance and make the owners of the property aware that you will be shooting in their property, some won't allow that.

See if there are any group shoots or workshops near you or that you could travel to, to build your portfolio.

Don't waste your time with agency models for what you want to shoot, they rarely shoot Glamour and the only Lingerie  they shoot is for advertisements.

Don't let anyone tell you what you should be shooting, shoot what you like.

100% the best advice, when you subject yourself to these forums you're certain to receive some immensely negative condescending critique from some one note pompous a** . Use your senses and own tastes and observe, observe, observe...

Worth repeating or the people in the back. Shoot what you like!

A critique you didn't ask for I might add.

Say yes to everything (within reason)
Find a way to capture any and everyone better
See a set or prop in things others don’t
Squeeze every bit of juice from what you already have at your disposal

Consider honing your skills in other areas like portraits, landscapes, or product photography. These genres offer ample opportunities to develop your technical expertise and creative vision, building a strong foundation for your portfolio.

Looking at your profile pictures, I see no need for you to move, you have some good models where you are. Do you really need the hassle of moving to LA and trying to find a place to live there so that you can photograph expensive professional models with ridiculous silicon enhancements that thousands of people have already photographed? I don't think that would necessarily increase your profile, because then your pictures would probably look the same as a lot of other peoples' pictures.

Before you invest in the more expensive locations like LA and NYC, suggest you might try Atlanta. Nearer to you, less expensive, and a quick search returns 147 nude models in the area. Good luck.

A mobile home would seem to offer the ultimate in mobility, you could move around and find suitable models and outdoor locations that few people have yet photographed. Browsing on this site reveals numerous models in places that most people have never heard of let alone visited.

Keep in mind that while a house increases in value, a mobile home decreases. If at some time you wish to get out, you will find yourself under water. And be sure to budget for the cost of moving your mobile home around.

Also, do you wish to invite models to shoot in your trailer?

I do most of my photography, including the picture at left in a room which is just over 8 ft wide. I use flash for front lighting and fluorescent tubes, mounted vertically on the walls for side lighting. There are partitions on each side to shade the camera position. So a trailer or campervan can be equipped for photography, that's possible.

Tents can also be used for photography. I have a light tent which is large enough to accommodate models in sitting poses, this can be used outdoors in good weather although to date I haven't had the opportunity to do so. But if you were in the model's home town, you might well be able to shoot in her home if no outdoor location was suitable.

I actually really like that idea, it might even be genius?
