I just received an email from Shaw Media Group from someone named "Luke" looking for a makeup artist for a shoot. The way they presented the details was sketchy and when I responded back to them it was clear that it is a scam.  I wanted to warn other creatives on Model Mayhem!!  They mentioned they found my info on here.  This is the second internet scam I've been approached with...beware, be careful and ask alot of questions if its not a regular client!

Yes, don't accept any checks coming from them!!! You will be scammed. At worst, you'll be in a $1,500 hole with the bank for a fraudulent check!

Unfortunately, it sounds like you didn't receive your message through PM from an MM member.  That means that we are very limited in what we can do to help you.  Thank you for sharing.

Something to note, however, they were able to find you here to contact, because you have your email address on your profile.  If you don't mind getting the scams, that is fine.  If you are concerned, you may want to remove your email address.

Welp the same thing happen to me dolls! They went as far as to text my phone when I didnt respond to their initial email (They found my number on my style seat page). All sounded good until they told me that I'd have to pay the stylist after cashing the check Pawahha! even if this were real I would never put myself in the position to cash a check and disburse payment to someone else who they are clearly in contact with whom is suppose to be working on set just as I am. That should be their responsibility to pay everyone. So I asked would they just pay via paypal and they said no only 'Certified Business Check'.

As much as I'd like to send a rude email back I will just ignore them. Sorry to hear that some of you gave your address. As long as you do not cash the check you will be fine. Its said that when you google this you have to put /scam/ behind the company to even find something. I hope this spreads the word.

btw this is the # they text from (484)-440-2694 'luke'

I was hit up too. There were a lot of red flags, and I knew something had to be wrong. So glad I read the posts. I advised them via email (when they wouldn't provide a phone number or answer emails until now) that this SCAM has been identified. The guys name is Luke, but is not a part of the actual Shaw Media Group out of Illinois. He will ask you to receive a check, but take part of it out to wire to the Wardrobe Stylist. Who does that? No contract no proof, no dates and an 1800.00 payday. His mistake was also that he said he got my information off of MM. I told him if a check came here I would turn it over to the authorities along with all the contact information he'd supplied.

Having been a victim of fraud personally, I thought it best to contact the back that the check was issued from in hopes they could notify the people who the account may belong to so they would know their account number was exposed. The check cam via Fed Ex from a Dr. and then inside was a BOA cashiers check from the "Freeman Co" which I know to be a medical event coordination company out of Irving (the check said Houston). Luckily BOA said the account number is not valid at all so at least no one out there is being stolen from unless they were someone on here that didn't catch it was scam and actually tried to cash the check at their own bank.  Good luck everyone, I never thought having my email address on here for business purposes would be such a disaster.

Glad the folks posting here were wise to this scam.  Here's a true story showing the dark side of this type of scam:

My wife, now a retired teacher, had an aide who fell for a scam like that.  The woman deposited a $5,000 check she received by overnight courier, then turned around and forwarded a $4,000 check of her own to the address requested by the scammer.  Of course the check they sent her bounced.

As a teacher's aide making slightly more than the minimum wage, her checking account had less than a $1,000 in it before she received the scammer's check.  Which meant that the check she sent them bounced and they received nothing for their efforts.

But, the bank contacted local authorities.  She was prosecuted for bank fraud and went to jail for two years.  She is now a convicted felon and cannot work as a teacher's aide any more.

The authorities never bothered to go after the folks who scammed her.  Said she should have known better.

You shouldn't be posting urban legend like this with false representations.
Obviously, this is bogus and didn't actually happen. No one is going to jail for two years for being victimized by a Nigerian scam.

Thank you all for posting this information including the number 4844402694, that was used to text from. Googling this number was how I found these postings I was contacted from that number from a Mark and was asked to email [email protected]. I did my research because it seemed like a scam from the onset. Hopefully these posts will continue to help others not get taken advantage of.

I got the same Mark Hoodle letter... It kinda sucks because I''m still at the point where I''m getting my name out there and waiting for my "break" and I thought this may have been it.

Not to mention I''m sure a lot of other artist are at the same point as I am, some even struggling with their finances.  I think this may be the wrong demographic, to be honest haha.

It''s crazy, on the email when they "hire you"  he even attaches pictures of the models you''d be "working with".

People can be so sad.

These are all Nigerian scams. You get a check, deposit it and find out later it bounces. Any money you forwarded, you lose. I saw an old guy at the post office awhile back, doing just this. Postal clerk tries to dissuade him, but the guy wouldn''t listen.

Once the bank figures out the check is bad, you are out the money you forwarded, the money you "kept" ... and the bank fees. Just don''t do it.

Same thing just happened to me. I got all the exact emails from "Mark". I just received the fraudulent check from a painting and restoration company in Georgia this morning thrive FedEx. I decided to Google the company and got a phone number.  When I called,  the lady that answered was in total shock.  She had no idea and was terrified. I emailed her the check with her company name and she said she would notify the police.  "Mark" even sent me a congratulatory email saying I was hired with attached head shots. I will be taking the check to the fraud department at my local police station.  THIS IS A SCAM BEWARE!!!
