Yes I know there are many things I can do to improve my photography, but I'm slowly learning how to work PS.  I was going for the alternative edgy look here but it doesn't seem right to me.  Can anyone give advice on what might make this look better and how to go about it.  Any helpful critiquing is appreciated.

I'm new to model photography but I do have a degree in Fine Art.  From a design standpoint, it looks like moving the figure a little to the right would help to give the photo a more solid/balanced feel.  I do like the basic shot and pose.

Thanks I can fix that with cropping, I noticed it but forgot haha. Basically I unsharpened it and adjusted the Shadows/Highlights.  But some of the photo seems to blown out to me.

I don't dislike the balance of subject/negative space at all.The space on the right gives the image a dynamic that would become very static when the subject is centered. It's not the type of pose that needs that kind of formal balance.
I have found it useful in editing to either have a specific effect in mind- or find an image I like the edit of- and try to figure how they got it to that point.
Your particular image feels mushy to me... There is a LOT of contrast- which implies a strong light source- but the EDGES of all that darkness aren't as sharp as they should be with all that light.....
"Save as" is one of your best friends.... You can create multiple edits of an image- hopefully learning along the way- without destroying your original file. Just keep playing, and trying new things.... there are SO MANY sites with online tutorials, and magazines and books that are available. I like to learn WHAT I'm doing, so I can apply the technique to different situations, rather than just "move the slider to 86." I'm no expert- but I do OK for a mostly self taught guy.....     Greg

for when this moves to critique.

too much high pass..
its not well done, If you were going for the high pass, you have to look at how it's turning out compared to others..and it's too "deep"

Can we see the original?.

also the angle, seems too top heavy, more leg should have been spread forward, and made her look more lenghy, rather than splodge shape, I would choose another from the set of images you took

Assuming a mod will move and I will be forgiven I'll give it a go:

PS wise its gritty done all wrong. you have too much noise and clipped lights and darks.
Models skin is not flattering too and considering a female, that can get you in trouble.
If I were you I would google for "gritty" photoshop effect and go from there. Calvin Hollywood has a nice free video somewhere but I couldnt find it just right now.

This halo needs to go. As for the rest, it depends on the effect you're after.

Not sure what you mean by high pass but here's my next attempt.  I'm not liking this to much either.

are you trying to get all the effect done at once using a raw converter or are you actually opening them up in ps and mixing multiple conversions etc or working on a jpg and some layers?

I converted from RAW to jpeg.  I'm also using layers.  I tried to follow this tutorial as best I could but I'm using elements 8 and couldn't find everything the tutorial was talkin about.

Its time for you to get photoshop cause seems like your needs keep growing smile

there are many ways to do that in PS and raw converters...Plus there are some plugins from LucisArt, Topaz and Nik that can get similar results with just moving around some sliders.
