I generally use rope but I can do chains to I guess. I am pretty much a God ....to some....when it comes to Japanese Bondage, but I have been known to use other items:
Chains, electrical tape, string, twine, dental floss - this is what we refer to as "ad hoc" or whatever is laying around the house.

I got a model to do the splits for me then tied her to a length of bamboo...
