I'm thinking of buying a makeup kit to give my DIL something to learn from and practice on.  She does pretty good with her own makeup and I think she'd do okay with most models.  She referred me to a cousin of her SIL or someone like that who's a real MUA and who works in a salon.  She gave me a catalog from ColoreScience and picked out a bunch of products that we can start with.  It looks like the prices are pretty high, but hey, what do I know about this stuff?  I was just wondering if any of our MUA's were familiar with the brand.

If she is just starting out I would spend too much money on products as she will continue to define her own preferences and style  as she goes along. A lot of these are not super high quality but good for beginners- I also know a lot of pros who find some of the cheaper things kit staples.

La Femme e/s ($3): Black, Bisque, Brown, Burgundy, Charcoal, Dark Brown, Grey, Taupe, Peach, Frosted Beige, Bronze, Gold, Beige Pink, Irid. Taupe, Irid. White

MUD  blush ($10 each): Lemon Cream, Glow, Bubblegum, Rose Beige, Warm Bisque, Cool Mauve, Brick, Garnet, Rose Petal, Soft Peach, Brick and Berry
http://www.mudshop.com

NARS Fame lipstick Pallette ($65): It has the 12 shades that made Nars famous, I have this in my kit along with a ton of MAC lipsticks but I reach for this more. I wish I would have had this when I was fist starting out.

Vincent Kehoe Foundation Palettes ($40 a peice): KO and Shinto Series

MAC Invisible Setting Powder ($18): Not available online but available through the Pro Store on North Robertson

Cinema Secrets ultimate foundation palette ($21): Kit #1

La Femme Cake Eyeliner ($3): Black and Brown

Eyeliner: Drugstore is fine, Black, Dark Brown, Taupe, Rich Brown

Lipliner: Nude, Berry, Red, Pink

Mascara: Max Factor 2000 Calorie in Black and Black Brown

NARS bronzer in Laguna

Auraline Brush 15 peice Brush Set ($160): I bought a tone of these brushes at the trade show and I use them a lot, and for somebody just starting out they are affordable and perfect.

Make-up Case ($69) http://www.yazmo.com/index.asp?PageActi … ProdID=513

Also: Good sponges, disposable mascara wands, a metal or wax paper palette, palette knife, spray bottle with 99% alcohol, professional brush cleaner, tissues, cover cloth

hope that helps. if you are looking to start her off with more high end stuff I can also make recommendations.

everything in my kit I sell in my store www.Camerareadycosmetics.com  and it's all makeup formulated for photography...no titanium dioxide, high pigment.  Mostly RCMA and Cinema Secrets.

ooops, one exception...the illuminare is best for TV not print...it is high in titanium dioxide

Rachel,

I really appreciate the time you took to think all that out and type it all in.  Time for some study!

Paul,

Also the Make-up Designory sells a premade kit that is pretty good for somebody starting out. I still have some of the items in my kit. But it makes for easy one stop shopping.

I think that MAC does too, but it is considerably more expensive.

Boy, this stuff gets into some money!  $911 to start out with.  That's a lot more than my budget will stand.  But thanks for the idea.

Yeah the initial cost of becoming a make-up artist comes as a bit of a shock to non MUAs. I have easily invested thousands in my kit.

If this is a gift you may want to just give her a professional brush set.  Make sure its a good one though smile  You can get them for under $100.00

This business is very expensive, most artists spend thousands on their initial kit and we keep spending hundereds a month to keep it stocked.

Paul, the MAC one is under $500. But it's only available to students.
